  1. I have had rooted phones for so long I literally can't remember the last phone I had that wasn't rooted. Rcently my rooted LGG4 up and died on me. I went back to my G3 rooted and set about finding a replacement G4. Finally found one new for a great price. Sadly it has Marshmallow on it and it seems that pretty much every one I am going to find in good condition will already be "upgraded" as well. [emoji19] After many hours of searching it seems that not only is their really no proper root for Marshmallow in general, it also seems that their is no hope for it ever, at least for us cellular anyway. So here I am with a nice shiny new G4 with no root and I am scratching my head somthing fearce trying to decide what to do. Do I just stay on my G3 with root or set up the G4 and try to learn to live with stock? With the way things seem to be going with anroid in general, root seems to be getting less and less doable with every update. If I decide to try to live with a stock phone, do I stay with the G4, which I did like but liked MUCH better with root, or do I break down and buy a actual new phone....most likely the V20....since I will probably never be able to root again anyway, and hand the G4 down to a family member for a bit of a upgrade. For those that went back to stock phones after root, what did you do to adjust. How did you learn to live with stock more ad block, no more Titanium backup, no more "usability" tweaks....I am freaking out a bit LOL. [emoji16] What to do... Sent from my LGUS990 using Tapatalk
  2. Living with a non rooted to adjust.

Thanks. I will look for that. So far I have actually been a tad impressed with this phone without root. One of the features I used a lot on previous phones was the dual window. The problem tho was the only two apps that I actually used wouldn't come up as usable without root. That really had me kinda bummed, but surprisingly dual window with those apps actually works on here without root. [emoji41] For the ad block so far, I have a couple apps that have the banner ads on them but only one of them is really used regularly. I am just having to be a bit more conscious about where I have my fingers when I use it. lol.. Sent from my LG-US996 using Tapatalk
  3. Living with a non rooted to adjust.

Well, I guess i will be learning to live with a stock phone for a while. Went and got the LGV20 Will definitely be some getting used to. So far it is going "ok". Not installing ad block and titanium backup was a bit strange, and having tings like file explorer telling me "no root" was a bit cringe worthy lol but we'll see how it goes
  4. Living with a non rooted to adjust.

Thanks. I do have my G3 rooted. I was hoping I would be able to find and use something like this for the G4 but it seems the more I look and read, the more it looks like it is not possibe to root a US cell G4 with marshmallow on it. Everything I am finding it seems, even with something like bump, still needs to have a lollipop downgrade for actual root and it is looking like basically any "new" G4 I would be able to get will have a version of marshmallow that can't be downgraded. [emoji20][emoji20] I am basically at the point now I think where I am trying to decide if I want to use the G4 unrooted or just go and pick up the V20. Sent from my LGUS990 using Tapatalk
  5. Living with a non rooted to adjust.

Looking into the Magisk option over the last couple days.....and I think I hit th information overload point lol[emoji16] Being that it has been a couple years since I had to really "work" at a root solution....I did at one point know how to do things like getting boot images and whatnot, but with soooo many threads and posts on xda and sooo little for us cellular in general lately, I am pretty much lost to say the least [emoji20] It looks like Magisk should be what I would need but at this point it might be a while before I will be able to give it a try. I will defiantly need to do a lot more reading and sorting through things. [emoji4] Sent from my LGUS990 using Tapatalk
  6. Living with a non rooted to adjust.

    Thanks, looking into that now
  7. Living with a non rooted to adjust.

Hehe...I run into that also. Find a no root option for something, get all excited and the find out it is only for a specific phone or it only works on wi-fi or something. I am looking around again for no root options for a few things right now and am starting to run int that again.[emoji16] Sent from my LGUS990 using Tapatalk
  8. Living with a non rooted to adjust.

Bloat and ad block were my reasons for rooting initially as well way back when. I did mess with roms a couple times early on as well, but was never impressed enough to stay with any of them. I was perfectly happy with stock rooted. I had kinda forgot how long I actually had the G4 and never even considered that it might have been "updated" being that it always seemed kinda rare that we ever got much on that end. It wasn't until I had it in hand that I found out about Marshmallow. The V20 does sort of have root but only on specific models ad it's a tad sketchy it seems, but as usual, no root for us and best I can tell will never happen I am not a fan of Samsung and haven't actually looked into them at all. I had actually seriously considered the Nexus 6P but used ones are still going for way more than I am willing to pay for a used one, and no sd card kinda kills it for me anyway. My G3 is a bit more "quirky" that I remember it being but I can stay with it for now. I have more reading to do to see what is still available and rootable but their don't really seem to be a whole lot of good options anymore. [emoji52]
  9. Second opinion on G4 on ebay?

Found another one for cheaper with a busted screen. I'm thinking pull the guts from that and put it in this new body. Still cheaper so far than buying a actual new one LOL
  10. I was under the impression that all US Cellular version phones were marked as such on the box. Did that change at some point or is this the unlocked version. Listing says he tried using it on Verizon but it kept trying to activate on US Cellular. Anyone have any thoughts on this? Thanks Sent from my LGUS990 using Tapatalk
  11. Second opinion on G4 on ebay?

Well.....Got the phone. Had Marshmallow 6.0 on it. Tried to revert back to Lollipop using LGUP. Looked like it was working. Said 100%. Apparently not so much. At the moment, computer sees that something is connected, but don't know what it is. Wont power up. Think I just bricked my first ever phone LOL Had it in my hands for a whole two hours. Never even got to the trying to activate it part. Hmmm
  12. Second opinion on G4 on ebay?

That makes sense, thanks. I did buy it so we'll see how it does [emoji41] Sent from my LGUS990 using Tapatalk
  13. Second opinion on G4 on ebay?

Even on LGs website it lists 991 US Cellular version and 991 Unlocked version. I guess if it is showing US Cell on the boot screen it should be no problem, it just seemed a bit odd that their is a unlocked version with the same number.
  14. Second opinion on G4 on ebay?

That's what I thought as well with the model number. I guess what I was worried about was that I have been seeing alot of 991s that are being listed as "unlocked" gsm on ebay and newegg. I actually found a listing for a white 991 unlocked for us cell. I don't remember having the option for white. It was only gold, grey or leather. Sent from my LGUS990 using Tapatalk
  15. Has anyone used LGs repair service for a out of warenty phone? Or any thoughts about trying them? Phone is two years and two months old. Have been having the odd issues for maybe a month or so like aftermarket launcher stopping occasionally and double tap to wake seeming not work reliably anymore but otherwise phone has been fine. Using it over lunch today no problem, came back to it two hours later and it was off. Won't power back on Tried a new battery when I got home along with the charger and even plugging in to my computer.....nothing... Not a dang thing Dug out my G3 and ran to the store to get it back up so I have a phone, but now I don't know what to do with the G4. I am going to assume it is out of warranty and would have to pay LG for repairs, and I am not real keen on them having to wipe the data as I haven't been able to do my weekly backup lately and kinda have a few things I really don't want to loose. I got a card from the dude at the store for a guy that does repairs and possible data recovery. I will try him tomorrow for kicks but I am wondering if it might be cheaper/better money wise just to send it LG and live with the lost data. Any thoughts on things? Thanks
  16. Thanks. I will give US cell a call for kicks and see what they say.[emoji4] Sent from my LGUS990 using Tapatalk
  17. Getting TWRP installed

Actually, thinking more on it, all I really would like to do is get xposed installed. But even that seems to get me into troubles also. Way too many links and I am scratching my head as to what to download/use anymore. It has been way too long since I last looked into this stuff and I am getting a tad bit lost and overwhelmed over the last few days. I did try flashfire which seems like it is the way to go, but ran into a no boot issue and again had to reflash stock and start over. Don't know if it was the wrong xposed version or what the issue was.
  18. Getting TWRP installed

Back on my G3 with 5.0.1 for a bit and I am having a bugger of a time trying to figure out how to get TWRP on it. Rooting was no problem but everything I can find for recovery doesn't seem to work anymore. A bunch of broken links or ADB commands that I am guessing are for previous versions of android as they always come back with errors about not finding correct files for things. The only thing I was able to find that I had hope for was the official TWRP app from the play store but I have tried multiple versions of TWRP through that and all of them just give me, I think it said secure boot?error, and just goes into a recovery bootloop. I have had to reflash stock recovery and re setup the phone way too many times now. Is their anything out their yet that still works?
  19. I had that thought also. I am still not sure if I want to try to send mine in for repair or just buy a new one off ebay. Not sure what would be cheaper/easier/faster at this point. Sent from my LGUS990 using Tapatalk
  20. LG G3 Root Guide

Necro post I know.....LOL BUT... Being That I recently had to return to my G3 for a while, just in case anyone else is still using one and wants root, the "NEW METHOD (5.0 Lollipop)" works beautifully
  21. LOL I actually kind of had that same thought about a self destruct mode. This is the first phone I actually bought new full price day of launch and also the first phone that has ever just up and quit on me.
  22. After more messing with things, still no joy in getting it to power up Connecting to the computer it isn't even recognized as being connected. My pictures at least are thankfully all on my sd card so no worries their but I think it is pretty safe to assume the phone made its way to the great electronics pile in the sky I would assume that any kind of recovery would be dependent on it at least being recognized by other hardware? If my computer don't know it's connected, software I'm guessing will probably not be able to do anything. As a side note, It has been a couple years since I used my G3, but I don't seem to remember it feeling kind of slow and jittery. Not horrible per say, but noticeable now after using the G4 for a couple years lol.
  23. Thanks Rub. I will try it again when I get home tonight. I keep hoping it would just be some fluke thing and it will start working again[emoji4] Sent from my LGUS990 using Tapatalk
  24. This has been mentioned a few times in the discussion so I figured it wouldn't hurt to have a dedicated thread for it I broke down last week and decided to set mine up for it. For the cover itself, their are a few places you can go for them but I ended up going through Amazon. This one here. It is the European version D855. $32.99 plus free shipping from New Jersey. Ordered on Monday 11/17 and got it yesterday 11/24. Best I can tell it is a OEM part. They only seem to have it in black tho. For the charger I got the "official" G3 one also from Amazon, WCD-100. Unfortunately I ran into a "minor" issue with it tho. It works fine with a naked phone but will not work with a case. I have two that I tried, a Spigen slim armor and a similar cheaper one from ebay that is a tad thinner, and it would not charge with either one on the phone. So that charger is on it's way back to Amazon and I ordered a different one that should be here tomorrow. This one. From various reviews, it seems that it works well with other phone models with a Otter Box case so I am guessing it has a stronger output. I will let you know when it comes in. If you don't want to go through Amazon, another place I found that I have ordered from before is Etrade Supply. They are a bit more money with shipping tho and most likely longer on shipping as it will be coming from over seas. The model numbers you want to look for regardless of where you shop are the D855 European or the LS990 for Sprint. Hopefully they will show a picture of the inside of the cover. What you are looking for is four brass contacts. The top two are for the NFC like in the stock cover, the bottom two are for the Qi chip. Stay away from the ATT version. It is PMA not Qi and wont work. If you are a fan of the quick circle case, their are TWO versions of it. The most common one is the snap on type that is the same as most other cases, it just fits over the phone, and one that actually replaces the stock back cover. You want to the second one. Qi-Infinity sells them HERE. And because it don't add any extra thickness, it will work with the official G3 charger.
  25. Went and look at one a couple days ago. Sat their for a good 25 minutes or so playing with it. I like it but I'm still not really sure if it's worth upgrading from the G3 for me. I have to buy it outright if I want one. The grey back was what they had on display. I forgot to ask about the leather. What I liked.... It was kinda hard to get a good "in hand" feel because of the security brick on the back but I did actually like the looks of it. The curve is a bit more subtle than what I was expecting from seeing the pictures. Size wise, without a case it is the same as my G3 with a Spigen slim armor case. The UI seems nice. I really couldn't compare exactly to the G3 being I have never used the stock launcher on mine, but it defiantly felt nice and snappy. The camera seems a lot quicker to open and shoot from both the screen icon and volume shortcut. When using the volume shortcut, two clicks and it's open and ready to go compared to holding the button on the G3 and waiting. Pictures came out excellent. Front camera is a lot nicer as well. I looked a lot better on the G4 than I did on my G3 I don't have a lot of stock apps so it was kinda hard to compare things but the few I could play with did seem to open quicker. I can also say that from what I could tell, all the "factory" software options that should be their are still their as well. From what I have read elsewhere, several options have been removed on other carriers. Still no FM radio tho. The display does look quite nice. Colors do look nice and crisp. I could defiantly tell the difference sitting next to my G3. Which leads me to what I kinda didn't like. I guess i can't really say I didn't like it but..... The display. To me it seemed dimmer than my G3. I messed with things with and without the auto brightness and to me, my G3 just seemed brighter all around. I don't know why. UI wise, although it did defiantly feel quicker as a overall, some things seemed about the same compared to my G3 but it could very well be stock vs aftermarket launcher. Don't really know what else to add for now. I was kinda hoping I would have came out more sure of things for or against, but unfortunately I still don't know which way to go with it. I do really like the G4. I also still really like my G3. Very tough call.
