  1. Possible data roaming problem

What triggers a US Cellular phone to use roaming instead of the US Cellular towers, for data? At the location I work at, my US Cellular service bounces between no signal and 3 bars of 1x. Occasionally, I will see a bar or two of 3g or 4g, but it is usually 1x. Even when I do see the 3g/4g, it is painfully slow to use. I also have a Verizon work phone, and I usually have 3 bars of 4g on it. Is it normal for a US Cellular phone to stay on the 1x if a 4g roaming network is available? Thanks.
  2. Hello TUSC! For the last few months I have been running Cyanogenmod and keeping up with the latest nightlies for the Galaxy S4 (SCH-R970). Then, there was one nightly nightmare and I was stuck in a boot loop. Alright, no big deal, I'll just recovery boot and downgrade to the previous nightly. When I booted back up, I was roaming, and when I tried to make a call it said something along the lines of "you are roaming, if you would like to purchase....". That's no good! I did some research, changed the network settings around a bit (changed CDMA roaming mode to "home only"), and that got 4g LTE running. Meaning that I could go online, but still couldn't call or text anyone (it just says no mobile network available). Very strange. I changed the CDMA back to "automatic" and tried *228. The call would just hang (the lady would say to wait for a few seconds, an advertisement would play, then just silence until I eventually hung up). Alright, things are getting serious... I did a factory reset—still no luck. I flashed 4.4.2 stock touchwiz. Still doesn't work. Any ideas? Thanks!
  3. Future 4G Roaming Agreement?

  4. I've been flashing my phone around and somehow somewhere along the line it got pretty messed up. I was using an older version of Woundtights rom that had some bugs and I decided to flash a more recent version of his rom but it left me in a bootloop and I tried the kernel fix along with the supersu update and nothing changed. so I then flashed a cm11, and cm10.2 official rom and both booted up fine but data/service is not right. Always says I am roaming and data along with calls etc are not working either. I also tried *228 and it fails and the weirdest part is that it goes through Verizon. Any help or direction is greatly appreciated, i'm tight on time right now and just want to know whether or not this can be fixed or I should just go buy a new phone. thank you
  5. Does anyone here have any experience with roaming and running a "non-stock" ROM (Cyanogenmod)? I recently went on a trip to Sioux City, which according to the map, is a roaming area. I was running "Arrakis / BareBack" ROM and had roaming 3G. For the heck of it, I restored a CM based ROM and had no service at all. I did check the settings, and everything was similar (Data enabled, Data roaming, CDMA, etc.) Just curious if anyone else had any input?
  6. I had a nice visit with a USCC customer service rep this afternoon regarding pre-ordering the Samsung Galaxy S III phone. During the conversation I asked if roaming with 4G was going to be as solid as roaming with 3G. As the rep was explaining, that as of now, 4G will only work in USCC 4G areas, he suggested that I use WiFi as much as possible while roaming. I asked why, and his response was that "USCC has a data roaming limit of 200MB." Of course I said that "I had never heard of such a thing. I thought that my 5G Family Essential Plus plan gave me 5G of data regardless of whether I was in USCC territory or not." He said "not the case, and that if a user was to exceed the monthly roaming 200MB limit, that their data usage could be terminated for the rest of the billing cycle or at least until they got back into their home area." This may explain why, occasionally, my web browsing and data-required app usage doesn't work well, when roaming, even though my Moto Electrify shows 4 bars (and also a strong signal strength when I go into settings>about phone>status>signal strength.) Well, has anyone else heard this little tidbit of USCC fine print policy? It is certainly not something that is advertised.
  7. I'm incredibly frustrated and having to debate a change from US Cell. I hope this is the right place to post and get some sincere responses. I really would prefer to stay with US Cell, but I'm not sure it's going to work. I have two problems related to data speeds and no one has been able to help us. 1) My phone, an S3, was just replaced for the 3rd time. Twice it was replaced because I couldn't get calls to connect (not drop once they were connected, it wouldn't connect). I even tried a non-S3phone and it did it too (in prime US Cell territory). The store service escalated the issue and I never heard from anyone, but the problem finally went away. Now we have 4G in our area and it seems like my data is worse. I rarely get above 1 or 2 bars of 4G even though we are considered in a prime location. Even sitting in their store. The 4G speed crawls to the point it's useless then until the phone suddenly switches to 3G and then things work OK. I was in the store Monday and they sent me a replacement I've activated today. But even my husband's S3 seems to get a very weak 4G signal despite being in their prime market (North Iowa). 2) If we leave Iowa our data speeds go to hell, and sometimes even when we are in Iowa. We can't go to the Twin Cities without having the data on our phones be completely useless. I'm not talking just a little slow, I'm talking slower than my dial-up modem from 15-20 years ago slow. We haven't even come close to the 200mb level for roaming when it happens. I know people say that data is slower when roaming but how much slower!!! When I've been to Orlando, Houston, and Dallas for work in the last year, the same thing happens. Completely unusable data. It may suddenly work for a bit, and then I can't even load Facebook. Even in Chicago two weeks ago things were slow and we weren't "roaming". The most frustrating part of this is that we often travel with another couple who are also US Cell customers and their phones always work better. (Older Motorola Electrify and the Samsung Axiom) We got a hot spot from them about 4-5 months ago and it was completely useless in the Cities when my husband was traveling. We've been given roaming support's number, but given the wait times it's impossible to call when we are traveling (and thereby busy). He called when he got back and was told we'd be better off with another carrier. I'm seriously thinking I have to plan the 2 hour drive just to call them from the Cities while I am roaming to see what they think. I think this roaming issue goes way beyond the 200mb throttling and the "you'll be slower when you roam" statements we've been given. It's INSANE! No one seems to really pay attention to the fact that I say other US Cell customers are not reporting the level of problem we have. We've literally had 3 reps now tell us we'd be better off with someone other than US Cell. I travel 3-4 times per year for work, about every 6-8 weeks to the Twin Cities (it's only 2 hours away), and we take 2-3 other personal trips per year. Our friends on US Cell just spent a week in Tahoe and had no issues. So, I'm really confused by that. Is this all just an S3 issue? What in US Cell's line up would be better without sacrificing the larger screen and other great features of the S3? Is it the network? Is it both? Is there anywhere else I can try to get satisfaction? How do I figure this out? I sincerely want to stay with US Cellular as I've been with them for 10+ years. But things have gotten bad with the S3, worse since 4G was introduced, and I'm uncertain where to turn. I'm nervous to leave US Cellular for Verizon (the only other viable local carrier) because I've also heard about great problems with their customer service, particularly if there is ever a billing issue. Our friends switched to US Cell because they took forever to process her contract termination due to military deployment and sent them to collections in the process. I know she did the paperwork right. I know the network will be better, but will I regret the switch for other reasons? Just looking for help. I'd like to stay with US Cell, but I think if I want to leave Iowa any time I will always have problems. One option I'm considering is a Verizon hotspot to connect our phones to for data when we travel and have issues! How crazy is that! If you made it this far, thanks. Any and all ideas are appreciated.
  8. Hello! I'm running WoundTight's unofficial RC9 of LiquidSmooth for my SIII. It is a beautiful rom, but one issue just developed: I have no data. Some notes: My WiFi is functional, as is my GPS.My IMEI is valid (not a bunch of zeroes).Airplane on/off does nothing.Reboot does nothing.I had a working 3G connection in Klamath Falls (Southern Oregon).I had a working 4G connection in Medford and Roseburg (Central Oregon).I have NO connection in Portland (Northern Oregon). This is where I am now.Trying to dial *228 won't work, as I have no mobile connection. The problem goes like this. I open the mobile networks option within Wireless & Networks. All three options (data enabled, data roaming, national data roaming) are enabled. My preferred network mode is LTE/CDMA/EvDo. My CDMA subscription is RUIM/SIM. I open the System select popup to change the CDMA roaming mode. It shows "Home only." I choose ANY option, which closes the popup. I click the button again to check, and it's back on "Home only." Simply put: I can't get away from home.
