Monthly Security Update OTAs

Recommended Posts

I have a few questions regarding the monthly security updates that are now being delivered. First October then November.  I am talking OTA updates not full factory images.

1) Is there a way to install the update with TWRP?

2) Is there a source where I can download a version that can be installed with TWRP or ADB?

3) Do the updates contain any other than security updates, like other enhancements. Is there a change log posted anywhere?

4) Anything else I need to know about these OTAs?

EDIT:

I've been searching for OTAs and instructions but have come up empty. Tons of stuff on images. Any useful responses to these questions would be appreciated.

I did find this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/ref-nexus-6-stock-ota-urls-t2906493

It is helpful but doesn't mention MRA58R in relation to U.S. Cellular.

5) Do the OTA security updates break root?

5) Do the OTA security updates break root?

1) No, the OTA checks for stock recovery, boot, system imgs that aren't modified and if they aren't there/are modified, the OTA fails.

2) No.

3) Mainly security updates, see https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/android-security-updates/GwZn7sixask

4) No?  As far as I know, the OTA to go to 58R hasn't been pushed 100% yet...I just flashed the factory images.

5) Android 6.0 is unique with root, you'll need to run a specific version of SuperSU and a boot.img that has root added in order for it to work correctly, so if you flash the OTA (assuming you are 100% stock), you won't be rooted.

Hopefully wugs will have the boot img with root when selecting the current build available in the toolkit. In essence my hope is I can be ahead of the ota, as it takes a few weeks once Google releases the build till the ota hits. If ahead of the ota then no issues will occur as the ota won't push since the build is already there. Likely living in LA LA land. Till then not manually rooting monthly as it has become more of a pain than its worth. Was fine with mra58k. Once mra58n hit then the issues started with twrp, super su , and getting the corrupt boot message. Thanks Google.

I'm on MRA58N with working root, updated yesterday.  You just have to have a kernel that supports it (the boot.img).  Most custom kernels do, and Chainfire has modified boot.imgs for all Nexus devices that work with either the traditional root method or the new beta systemless method.

All the stock OTA's are here, including MRA58R, just make sure you use Shamu images

Thanks for the reply. Just wanted to point out that the link points to images not OTA's. Following this link I can't flash anything using TWRP.

Ahh, yeah. You can use Wug's for them though

Google doesn't release the OTAs - sometimes you can find them on XDA, but not all of them.

Not to mention I wouldn't recommend relying on that as your method of updating because if there are any significant changes you are better off flashing the fully stock image.

I'm on MRA58N with systemless root. So far it's working great. I've been able to keep system read-only and still use Adaway. My understanding is I just need to flash stock boot and recovery and then I can sideload the OTA.
